Six Tips For Your First Therapy Session

Our tips for getting the most out of your first appointment

So you’ve scheduled your first appointment with a mental health provider -- congratulations!  Seeking help is a brave and important step towards caring for your mental and emotional well-being. Now that you’ve taken that initial step, it’s time to prepare for your first appointment. Writing notes before your first visit can help you feel more comfortable and get the most out of the session. Here are some tips:

  1. Write down what you want to discuss ahead of time. Therapy is generally unstructured, allowing you to talk about and focus on the areas where you need the most support. Jot down the issues you want to touch on before your first appointment, then use your notes as a guide during the session. This can help you stay focused and ensure you don’t forget any crucial points.

  2. Arrive early.  Arrive 15 minutes early for your appointment so you have time to complete any necessary paperwork.

  3. Ask questions. As a newcomer to the counseling process, it is only natural to have questions about how it all works. Don’t be shy - write down questions as you think of them and then ask away!

  4. Be honest and open. To get the most from your time in therapy, it's important that you be honest and open with your counselor. This will help them better understand your situation and provide you with the best possible support.

  5. Keep an open mind about the counseling process. Therapy is not a quick fix – it’s a gradual process. It may take time to start noticing progress, so don’t get discouraged. You’ve begun your journey on the road toward improving your mental and emotional health -- don’t hop off at the first exit!

  6. Don’t settle for the first therapist you meet. If, for some reason, you don’t ‘click’ with your first counselor, do not feel obligated to continue working with them. You’ve got to feel comfortable being your most vulnerable self with your therapist. If you think that the person you are working with is not an ideal fit, don’t be afraid to cancel future appointments and set up an appointment with another provider.
